Coarse Aggregate and Fine Aggregate Introduction
Aggregate refers to those loose granular material filled in the concrete with the role of skeleton. This is usually called concrete aggregate whose diameter is generally more than 0.16mm. According to the apparent density, aggregate is usually divided into three kinds that are general aggregate, lightweight aggregate and weight aggregate (such as barite). Also, aggregate can be divided into fine aggregate and coarse aggregate by aggregate size.
Coarse aggregate includes pebbles, gravel, crushed gravel, blast furnace slag, broken bricks, the second aggregate (concrete crushing objects), and various natural rocks (such as andesite, quartzite) or artificial calcined materials (such as brick blocks, refractory clay clinker) with special features, etc..
Fine aggregate refers to the gravel or crushed stone material whose stone size is less than 5MM used for preparing the concrete. Fine aggregate is also divided into coarse sand, medium sand, fine sand and finer sand, whose fineness modulus is of 3.7 ~ 3.1, 3.0 ~ 2.3, 2.2 ~ 1. 6 and 1.5 ~ 0.7. According to production sources and materials, fine aggregate can be divided into ordinary river sand, mountain sand, sea sand, artificial crushed sand (stone chips), and waste sand.
Concrete fine aggregates generally uses clean river sand, suitable for the medium and coarse sand. Coarse aggregate should appropriately use gravel, crushed stone or crushed gravel based on local resources and material supplying conditions, combined with engineering and technical requirements. The maximum size of coarse aggregate should be decided according to the structure, steel spacing and construction methods, equipment and other selected conditions.
